The Psychology of Sleep & Phone Use
Hey Rise Centered Community,
Erin here! Did you know (according to Pew research) roughly 70% of Americans sleep with their phones in their bedrooms? And of that 70%, around 45% sleep with their phones on their bed or under their pillow?
Usually, your brain associates your bed with rest and relaxation, and your phone with alertness and stimulation. If you consistently use your phone in bed, or leave it lying next to your bed, your brain begins to associate being in bed with screen time and alertness. Which means difficulty falling asleep, trouble staying asleep and less time spent in deep sleep.
The good news? This association can be unlearned by making your bedroom a no-phone-zone. Not only will your sleep improve, your circadian rhythm will regulate and your before-bed screen time will be halved, creating space for journalling, connecting with a loved one, reading, or that elaborate skin care routine you've been meaning to try. To help keep your bedroom a phone-free space, we created a Sunrise Alarm Clock that doesn't require an app, WiFi or Bluetooth to function, making it the perfect alarm clock for your phone-free needs.
Here's to a good night's sleep,
Erin & The Rise Centered Team
