Put Your Life In 90s Mode

Hey Rise Centered Community,

It's no secret we love spending time offline to connect IRL. Which is why we were inspired by Gabriella Singh's Substack post, 'Saving my sanity and putting my life into 90's mode'. In it, she shares easy-to-use tips to tap into what we miss most about the time before smartphones: stillness, space to do what we really love, and in-person connection.

We loved it so much, we had to share! Below, we've collated 5 of her tips for putting your life in 90's mode.

1. Reinstate your land line: Put your smartphone in landline mode by leaving it in one room, ditching the morning scroll, and only letting phone calls, messages and calendar reminders come through. Silence everything else.

2. Scheduled news check in’s: These days, the news is available 24/7, and is often designed to spike anxiety. Calm your nervous system with a set morning and evening check.

3. Offline leisure: Think reading books and magazines from the library, creative writing in a notebook instead of on your laptop, or knitting.

4. Phone calls and mails: Call someone you love (instead of FaceTime), or send them a letter in the post. Going out of your way to reach someone you love in this way is even more powerful in 2025 than it was in 1995.

5. Local community: It sounds cheesy, but with the right community, you can face some of life’s toughest challenges. Take the first step, put yourself out there, and other people will show up when you need it.

As Gabriella says, “this is not about going back to the past. It's about remembering what matters most." We hope you enjoyed Gabriella's tips!

To intentional disconnection,

The Rise Centered Team
